Filipino migrant domestic workers organizations held a protest action outside United Centre, where Consulate General of the Phillippines in Hong Kong situates, on 5 July 2020.
The new Ant-Terror Law that President Rodrigo Duterte signed on Friday the 3rd of July 2020 marks the death of democracy in the country.
This was declared today dy progressive organizations and individuals to express their Outrage in the hasty signing of the ATL after this was raiiroaded in the Senate and House of Representatives.
The Anti-Terror Law contradicts itself which is to safeguard the democratic rights of the citizens. In fact, it is designed to terrorize the people, especially the government critics, social activists, mass media, and all sectors that the government perceives as its opponents.
An Anti-Terror Council composed of cabinet secretaries and officials under the President will determine who will be arrested, tortured, killed, and detained without due process. The military and police will implement this oppressive law which covers executive, judicia!, and even legislative powers.
Overseas Fiipino workers are not exempted from the ATL. As a matter of fact, even before the ATL, OFWs who voiced their opinions against the anti-migrant policies of the Duterte government have been harassed and politically persecuted. Imagine the worst impact of the ATL which has totally wiped away the rights and freedoms enshrined in the 1987 Constitution.
Even more contemptible is the timing of the passing of the ATL. The Filipino people are suffering from the worst ever health and economic plague caused by COVID-19. We are at the worst period in our history when a President ignores the urgent basic needs Qf the people as the Philippines records the highest levels of transmissions since the lockdown.
It is time to end Duterte’s oppressive and exploitative government that is marked by corruption, cronyism, and militarism that worsened poverty and caused misery to the ordinary people, it is time to demand delivery of health services and financial assistance according to the budgeted public funds.
Let us take this Anti-Terror Law as another challenge to rise up against tyranny, corruption, greed and dictatorship. Let us affirm that sovereignty resides in the people. Our best weapon Is to arouse, organize, and mobilize our compatriots.
Junk the Anti-Terror Law!
Defend human rights!
Provide free health and social services!
Duterte Resign Now!
